5 Habits for an Abundant & Joyful Life

In a world filled with hustle and bustle, finding joy in our daily lives can sometimes feel like a daunting task. It often can require hard work. I wanted to remind you, the reader, that joy is not just a fleeting emotion but a state of being that we can actively cultivate through intentional habits. Here are 5 key habits/practices that can help us infuse our lives with joy and fulfillment: prioritizing sleep, incorporating movement, nourishing our bodies with healthy food, embracing gratitude, and fostering meaningful connections.

1. Prioritize Sleep

I understand the profound impact that quality sleep can have on our overall well-being. Adequate sleep is essential for our physical health, cognitive function, and emotional resilience. By prioritizing sleep and establishing a consistent bedtime routine, we give our bodies the rest they need to rejuvenate and recharge. I encourage you to create habits that promote restful slumber and set the stage for a more joyful day ahead. Turn off electronic devices to create a tranquil sleep environment, A tidy room without clutter and chaos everywhere, a bed that is made so it feels fresh to come into, the right room temperature so you can get into a deep sleep and are not tossing and turning all night and a solid mattress that supports your body.

When we get proper sleep, it allows our neurons to reproduce. This is a chance to help increase our cognitive function and reset and refresh for the day ahead. Make good sleep a top priority – no one functions well when they are not rested.

2. Incorporate Movement

Exercise isn't just about physical fitness – it's also a powerful tool for boosting our mood and enhancing our sense of well-being. I often used to think if I couldn’t get in an hour work out, there was no point. Running a business, being a wife and mom, some days I take what I can get. 15 minutes of movement matters. It can be as simple as a dance party, or a walk outside to get fresh air and vitamin D or yoga to stretch and find our flow. By moving our bodies regularly, we release endorphins, reduce stress, and cultivate a greater sense of vitality and joy in our lives. Stop making it so complicated and just do it! It’s not punishment it's a blessing.

3. Nourish Your Body with Healthy Food

Our brains consume a significant amount of energy – about 25-30% of our body's total energy expenditure. After learning that fact, it changed everything for me. I struggle with my mental health.  so discovering how to properly fuel my brain was a game changer for me. We need nutrient-rich foods that fuel both our physical and mental well-being. By prioritizing a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, we provide our brains with the nutrients they need to function optimally. Eating mindfully and savoring each bite can also enhance our appreciation for the nourishing power of food, fostering a deeper sense of joy and connection to our bodies. I am still working on savoring each bite and slowing down. But bite by bite, or bit by bit, I know it makes a difference. Don’t chase perfection; pursue progress.

4. Embrace Gratitude

Gratitude is a transformative practice that has the power to shift our perspective and elevate our mood. I believe, to my core, that gratitude can change the posture of your heart. You change your heart; anything is possible. If you do not have a daily gratitude practice, stop waiting. Whether through journaling, meditation, or simply reflecting on the blessings in your lives, make this habit you can't miss. We practice gratitude as a family before bed; it is incredible to pull out 3 things you are grateful for from the day before you fall asleep. You are actually telling your brain about all the good that happened and giving it the evidence it needs to find rest and be at peace. We also keep a jar on our kitchen counter labeled Joy Starters. Each week, we write out the highlights and moments of joy that we are thankful for. You can get these super cute printouts here.

5. Get Deeply Connected

Human connection is at the heart of our emotional well-being, and I know the importance of nurturing meaningful relationships. Whether it's spending quality time with family, reaching out to friends, or participating in community activities, cultivating authentic connections enriches our lives and enhances our sense of belonging and joy. If you struggle to find connection and community, go to a group fitness class, I swear this is where all the best people hang out. They care about their health and wellness and prioritize self-care. We all have full lives, but it is as simple as a Facetime call or text to let others know they matter. Show up for others how you want to be shown up for, and give generously without expectations.

Embracing these 5 joyful habits—prioritizing sleep, incorporating exercise, nourishing our bodies with healthy food, embracing gratitude, and getting connected —can profoundly enrich our lives and cultivate a deeper sense of joy and fulfillment. By integrating these practices into our daily routines, we empower ourselves to live more vibrant, purposeful lives and embrace the beauty and joy surrounding us daily.
